EADTU visitors welcome University of Jyväskylä as a full member

Representatives of the European Association of Distance Teaching Universities (EADTU) office visited University of Jyväskylä, Finland, during the first days of December. The visitors, Managing Director George Ubachs and Senior Executive Advisor Piet Henderikx, met with the key members of the University of Jyväskylä as well as the Open University. In the discussion with Rector Matti Manninen themes about flexible and online education were covered. Furthermore, the university expressed its interests in participating widely into EADTU activities. Research and development areas discussed in the meeting with representatives of the Open University were related to assessment and feedback practices in teaching and learning, the development of the ICT supported pedagogy, multidisciplinary and working-life oriented competences and studies as well as student-centred guidance and counselling. These themes will also guide the participation of the open university to various EADTU activities.

University of Jyväskylä was accepted as full member of the EADTU in Rome in October 2016. University of Jyväskylä is one of the largest and most popular multidisciplinary universities in Finland. The University has about 2,500 employees and nearly 15,000 students from around 100 countries. The University combines high-level competence in education, natural sciences, humanities and social sciences, and sport and health sciences, as well as in economics and business administration, into a multidisciplinary entity. This profile is strengthened through the following core fields: Learning, teaching and the learning and growth environments that support development; Basic natural phenomena and mathematical thinking; Languages, culture and communities in global change processes; Physical activity, health and wellbeing; Information technology and the human in the knowledge society.

EADTU visitors Open University, University of JyväskyläThe Open University acts as representative of the University of Jyväskylä in the association. At the University of Jyväskylä the distance learning is primarily provided at the Open University. The Open University is an independent institute that operates in cooperation with the University´s faculties and other units. The Open University is an integral part of the University of Jyväskylä and the most popular open university in Finland with its 16 000 students annually. In 2015 27 % of the Open University studies in Finland were completed at the Open University of Jyväskylä. “The membership of the association provides us with an excellent possibility to develop our international cooperation regarding open higher education with the leading actors within Europe.” says Director of the Open University, Jukka Lerkkanen.
