About us

The Open University of the University of Jyväskylä (JYUOpen) is an integral part of the University of Jyväskylä, promoting educational equality and lifelong learning. We are proud to call ourselves the largest and most versatile open university in Finland, with 16 000 students annually.

The Open University offers around 40 bachelor-level subjects in Finnish from the faculties of the University of Jyväskylä, as well as a wide range of general studies, including language and communication courses.

We are specialized in distance learning – web-based learning environments play a significant role in our study.

The education is provided either as the University’s own instruction or in cooperation with currently around 50 regional partner institutions located in various parts of Finland. These partners are providing also other types of adult education than open university education.

The Open University is for everyone

Finnish open universities provide the opportunity to pursue university studies regardless of age or educational background. The teaching offered at the Open University of the University of Jyväskylä is of an equally high standard as the teaching offered at the University of Jyväskylä. It is not possible to complete degree studies at the Open University, however the credits completed at open universities will contribute towards a degree if the student is admitted to a university in order to complete degree studies.

Facts about the open university system in Finland

  • The Finnish Universities Act (558/2009) provides that universities must promote lifelong learning by degree-awarding, continuing, or by open university education
  • Open university education is provided at 14 Finnish universities
  • Open universities are integral parts of their universities, and they can also operate regionally
  • The objective is to offer everyone opportunities to develop their competences, to raise their level of education and to receive retraining
